One Life

A lot of time I don’t bother to watch the news because it’s just depressing. Even the weather is depressing.

But tonight I happened to turn on the Nightly News with Brian Williams and saw a story that absolutely blew me away with the simple reminder that 1) with God all things are possible b) our life’s experiences are not wasted and c) that God can and does use one life to change the lives of thousands. One obedient heart, one love, one devotion . . . in this case, one passionate young person whose life was very short, can give life to a city, a town, a people.

A little girl from Washington State named Rachel discovered that many children don’t make it to their 5th birthday for lack of clean drinking water. In lieu of birthday gifts for her ninth birthday, Rachel asked her family and friends to help her raise $300 which would help to provide clean drinking water to approximately 3 families.

She nearly made it to $300 and her birthday came and went when a month later her young life ended with a fatal car crash. I can’t fathom her family’s pain. The heartache is so palpable. But in the midst of all the tragedy, God did what He does, and He showed His glory. After Rachel’s passing, her family re-opened her Mycharity: water website for donations.

And get this. To date, Rachel’s charity has raised $678,729. Yup, you read that right. If my math is right (er….) that’s more than 10,000 people. Now that’s my God!

I was so glad to be watching the news with Jonah tonight. He was amazed that one little girl, even in death, could do so much.

Here is another link to Rachel’s story.
